Travel & Transport

Getting to Western Australia

All delegates are likely to arrive into Perth.  Perth has a domestic and international airport located near each other (allow at least 20 minutes for a bus transfer between).  Perth airport has many flight connections per day to Singapore and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with reduced frequencies to other destinations.  International delegates arriving into Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane will clear customs in those cities and arrive at the Domestic terminal.

Delegates arriving directly into Perth (usually through Singapore or Dubai) will arrive at the International Airport and clear customs there (see General Information for details on Australian Customs).  There are a broad range of accommodation options located near the airport, many with free airport transfers.  Central Perth is located about 10 km away, and a Taxi will cost approximately $20.  Taxi’s are readily available at both airports.

Please note that there is there is no airport in Bunbury.

Getting to Bunbury

Bunbury is located in the south west corner of Western Australia, approximately two hours drive south from Perth.

The conference will provide dedicated buses to transport delegates from Perth to Bunbury for a fee on the Saturday and Sunday prior to the conference and offer return buses on Thursday and Friday (all subject to demand). Pickup’s will be arranged from select hotels, the airport and central locations. Delegates will be able to register for these buses via Conference Registration.

Please contact conference organisers to book this bus transport (imwa2012@icms.com.au).

Train Service

Bunbury is serviced by the Australind train, and is approximately a 2.5 hour journey from Perth Railway Station. The Bunbury Railway Station is located close to most accommodation options. There are two services to and from Perth each day (including Sunday). Snacks and drinks are available throughout the trip. One way tickets cost $29.10 for adults and $14.55 for concession card holders, and can be booked either online, by phone on 1300 662 205, or at the station. Please be aware, however, that Perth Railway Station Ticket Office is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. See TransWA's website for online bookings and further information.

Bus Service

TransWA also has a bus service which operates between East Perth Terminal (located a short taxi ride from central Perth) and Bunbury Passenger Terminal.  Southwest Coach Lines (operated by Veolia Transport) offer bus transfers from both the Perth International and Domestic airports.  The bus has several drop off and pickup points within Bunbury.  The same bus services the city centre and nearby towns, 7 days a week.  Tickets may be booked online, or otherwise cash tickets are available upon boarding.

Hire Cars

Hire cars are available from both Perth Airport and Bunbury City.  Please book in advance to secure a vehicle.  Please be aware that in Australia, the original overseas driver's licence, as well as an International Driver's Permit is required (or an English translation if the overseas licence is not written in English).  Licences must be carried on the driver's person at all times.

Speed limits, wearing of safety belts and drink driving (0.05 mg/100 mL limit) are strictly enforced in Western Australia.  Hidden mobile and fixed speed cameras are commonly used.  Kangaroos and other wildlife can pose a traffic hazard especially at dusk and dawn and greater care should be taken when driving at these times.  When country driving please keep an eye on your fuel, as there can be large distances (>100 km) between petrol stations.
